We've all felt it before: the throbbing, pounding pain of a headache. Most of us only experience them every now and then, but others unfortunately suffer from chronic headaches, which can ultimately affect their relationships, work, and overall quality of life.

The Source of Headache Pain

Many of our patients come to us looking for relief from headache pain caused by tension headaches or migraines. So, what's the difference? Tension headaches start in the neck and the pain then refers to the temples, jaw, and middle and back of the head. They can be pounding and cause extreme pain. Fortunately, they respond quite well to chiropractic.

Many believe that if a headache is bad enough, it is categorized as a migraine. That is simply not true. Migraines are a special type of headache that have neurological and/or vascular components. Those that suffer from migraines can experience them without even having a headache. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, strange spots floating in the visual field, and sometimes even problems with speech. Extremely severe migraines can even appear to be strokes. Migraines often respond to chiropractic care, but it does depend on the severity, the type of migraine, and what triggered it.

Headache Relief and Chiropractic Care

By carefully improving the natural curve of the neck and the alignment of the spine, chiropractic care can help relieve headache pain. It also encourages better movement of the spinal bones. When these two things occur, the nerves that come out of the spine and control the muscles are able to fire more effectively. That allows normal muscle tone to return, and the muscles that may have been spasming before an adjustment will start to relax. Those muscle spasms refer pain to the head. When that takes place, it is called a trigger point. A trigger point can happen all over the body and is a knot in the muscles that will refer pain to other places. Tension headaches are commonly the result of trigger points in the neck, upper back, and shoulders.
