Tips for a Healthy Summer!

The summer season is in full swing, and that means an increase in outdoor activities…and also an increase in back injuries. Many of us are enjoying the longer days of summer: playing sports, enjoying outdoor exercise, and going for a swim. The stress and fatigue that increased activity can put on your body often leads to injuries and issues. Fortunately, chiropractic can help you recover. Here are our health and wellness tips to enjoy your summer.

Tip #1: Be sure to get your daily dose of vitamin D! When you spend 15-20 minutes in direct sunlight, you can increase your vitamin D levels. Proper amounts of vitamin D can decrease fatigue, help regulate bone strength, prevent osteoporosis, give you more energy, and boost your mood.

Tip # 2:  After you’ve enjoyed your daily vitamin D dose, be sure to apply sunscreen to all exposed areas. Don’t forget your ears, lips, back of your neck, and even the back of your hands. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and remember to reapply every 80 minutes. Remember, sunscreen application isn’t just for summer!

Tip # 3:  One thing we love about summer is seasonal fruits and farmer’s markets! There are many delicious fruit and vegetables that are available locally, so take advantage of the health benefits of fresh fruits and veggies. Or take it a step further and grow your own organic vegetables, fruits, and herbs.

Tip # 4: Remember to stay hydrated this summer! When exercising outdoors, take frequent breaks and hydrate often. It is easier to suffer from dehydration during the hot summer months, especially if you are spending a lot of time outside. Drink water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. If you’re already thirsty, then you might already be dehydrated!
