Keep an Active Mind and Body at Home
Like most people, you’re probably spending a lot more time at home. This has left many wondering how to stay healthy (and stay sane) while at home. Here are our tips to help keep you occupied and fit while you practice social distancing.
ESTABLISH A ROUTINE
Normal routines have pretty much been thrown to the wayside and it’s important to establish a routine for our new normal that creates active alternatives for you.
Sure, you may be able to stay up late and sleep in to your heart’s content, but try to resist the urge. Your sleep health will benefit from you maintaining a sleep schedule where you wake up and go to sleep at about the same time (even on the weekends).
Get each day off to a great start with a healthy breakfast and try to maintain the routine you usually would, whether that includes morning stretches, a shower, or a walk with the dog. Even putting on a different pair of pants each day can help raise your spirits and get you into the right frame of mind to take on the day.
STRETCH
Just because you’re not at the office doesn’t mean you should skip the reminders to get up and get moving (because you do that, right?!). Set a reminder on your phone or computer to get up out of your seat and stretch or move every hour that you’re awake. This can help with stiff joints and muscles and maintain circulation.
All this time spent at home would also be a great time to start practicing yoga or daily stretching. You can easily find plenty of yoga routines online that will best suit your goals and activity level or just ask us for suggestions during your next adjustment. After all, it is better to spend a little bit of time stretching than just sitting around all day.
TRY AT-HOME EXERCISES
Maybe you’re missing your spin classes, CrossFit competitions, or basketball games. Maybe you want to take advantage of this time at home to start a fitness routine. Whether you’re an all-star athlete or new to exercise, there’s an at-home exercise routine for you. Even if you don’t own any weights, there are plenty of bodyweight moves for a total body workout. Try searching on YouTube as plenty of health and fitness instructors are now teaching virtual classes or ask for some suggestions next time you’re at Shields Chiropractic.
Staying at home can feel daunting for some, but it can also be an opportunity to explore new hobbies and activities you might not have had the time to try previously. Make the most of each day and don’t let your focus on your health and wellness slip away.
