Tips to Stay Active and Healthy this Holiday Season
The holidays are certainly different this year, but it’s still a busy time of year. Holiday shopping, travel, socially-distanced events and more usually mean exercise is no longer a top priority. Maintaining your health is just as important as ever – if not more – so here are our tips to help you stay active and healthy during the holidays.
MAKE A PLAN TO MOVE
If you know that a jam-packed week is going to keep you from maintaining your regular exercise routine, it’s time to plan ahead. Reschedule your workout sessions as best as possible and if you can’t make it happen, try to wake up 30 minutes early to go for a brisk morning walk. Walking is an excellent form of exercise and can help clear your head so you can go into a busy day with the right frame of mind.
Speaking of walking, if you are heading out for holiday shopping, try to park at the far end of the lot so you can get in some more steps and take the stairs instead of the elevator whenever possible.
BENEFIT YOUR BODY WITH MOVEMENT
You may not be able to keep up with exercise as usual this holiday season, but you can still add bodyweight movements into your everyday routine and stay active at home. While brushing your teeth or waiting in line, start doing calf raises. While vacuuming or doing household chores, throw in some squats and/or walking lunges. If you’re hauling heavy shopping or grocery bags or doing holiday decorating, remember to lift with your legs (and maybe do a few bicep curls). It might feel silly at first, but any bit of movement will help benefit your body.
INVOLVE THE WHOLE FAMILY
Whether you are visiting loved ones this year or staying with your household, the whole family can join you and benefit from moving their bodies. Organize after-dinner walks, hikes, or even a game of football or catch. It’s a great way to spend quality time together while staying active.
